German Bones, American Heart
An article in the August edition of the (The Atlantic Times. German-American Bridge Builders) by Walter Pfaeffle tells us of a Minnesota town called New Ulm. This town has the Hermann Heights the Cheruscan chieftain, a Germanic hero in Roman times The. Monument stands in its center . Street signs and businesses have German scrip.
After World War 1 the U.S. Government tried to change the name “ Deutsche Strasse” to Freedom Street due to the hysteria of the War. New Ulmers courageously resisted and they prevailed.
Visitors flock to this town of some 14,000 just 90 miles southwest of the twin cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul. The visitors celebrate Oktoberfest and other German-American festivals.
German virtues are likely to survive as well. A walk through town and you are surrounded by clean streets and manicured gardens. Want to taste a little bit of Germany? Plan your next trip to New Ulm, Minnesota.
Here's another story of interest: For the fourth year in a row, Thomas Dold won the Empire State Bldg Run-up. The 24 year old German from Stuggart climbed the 1576 stairs in 10 minutes and 7 seconds-2.5 steps per second, and then happily collapsed once he arrived on the 86th floor. 300 runners from 17 countries took part in this year's race to the top of New York's highest skyscraper. Suzy Walsham from Singapore dashed up in 13 minutes and 26 seconds, thereby claiming the women's title for the 3rd year in a row. For the male winner more running followed immediately after finishing his sprint to the top, Dold had to race to the airport to catch his flight home.
